thermaShield™ Corneal Shield FAQ
-
thermaShield is a single-use, sterile, non-conductive corneal shield designed for radiofrequency (RF) treatments in which a handpiece is applied over the eyelid skin. It sits under the lids against the globe to protect the cornea, and its built-in handle gives the clinician control of the shield throughout the treatment. It is a medical device, not a topical product.
-
thermaShield is sold only to medical and aesthetic practices: physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses and clinical staff working under a medical director. It is placed in the office by trained staff and is not sold to consumers for home use. New accounts are verified before orders ship.
-
thermaShield is an FDA-registered and listed Class I medical device (510(k)-exempt). It is made in the USA.
-
One size: Large, 27 mm × 24 mm (model TSHLD01-L).
-
Yes. Each shield is individually packaged and ethylene oxide (EO) sterilized for single use. Do not use a shield if the package is damaged or the EO indicator is not brown.
Protecting the eye during periocular RF
-
When RF energy is delivered on or near the eyelids, clinicians place a corneal shield to protect the cornea and globe from mechanical, thermal and electrical injury.
-
When microneedling comes close to the lash line or eyelid skin, some clinicians place an internal corneal shield before delivering energy. thermaShield was designed for RF treatments in which a handpiece is applied over the eyelid skin. It was not developed for RF microneedling, and that is not an intended use. Whether to use any shield during microneedling is up to the treating clinician, following the microneedling device’s instructions for use and the practice’s protocol. The FDA has issued a safety communication on RF microneedling (October 2025) describing burns, scarring and nerve damage, and emphasizing appropriate use and training.
-
Metal conducts electrical current and heat. thermaShield is made of non-conductive medical-grade plastic, so it does not conduct RF energy to the eye the way a metal shield can.
-
Metal shields are typically used for laser procedures. thermaShield is a non-conductive shield designed for RF delivered through the eyelids, with a handle that helps keep it in position.
-
IPL shields are designed for light-based treatments. thermaShield is designed for RF delivered through the eyelids and is not intended for laser or IPL use.
Using the thermaShield™
-
thermaShield is designed for monopolar and bipolar RF treatments where the energy is delivered through the eyelids. Practitioners use it during treatments with platforms such as TempSure, Forma, Pelleve, ThermiRF and Density, among other RF systems. Always follow your RF device’s instructions for use and your clinic’s protocol. eyeThera is not affiliated with or endorsed by these device manufacturers.
-
Standard shields can migrate during treatment, which is uncomfortable for the patient. The handle lets the clinician keep the shield in position and provide steady support behind the lid while energy is delivered over it.
-
No more than 60 minutes. Corneal edema may occur with longer wear.
-
One shield per patient per treatment. For both eyes, move the same shield to the second eye during the same session. Do not reuse or re-sterilize.
-
Do not use thermaShield in an eye with an active infection, or in an eye that has had recent corneal or glaucoma surgery. Do not use a shield that is damaged or has been dropped, or if the pouch is damaged. Do not use for laser or IPL procedures.
Research, ordering and support
-
thermaShield grew out of clinical work by Edward Jaccoma, MD, eyeThera’s co-founder and Chief Medical Officer. A 2018 pilot study he led (Jaccoma et al., Journal of Dry Eye and Ocular Surface Disease) describes RF heating of the eyelids with a corneal shield in place to protect the eye and support the lid. Read the paper. Clinical technique is the physician’s domain; thermaShield’s own labeling covers corneal protection and support only.
-
thermaShield is sold to licensed practices directly from eyeThera through the physician store. New practices are verified before their first order ships. For volume or distributor pricing, contact us.
-
We stand behind thermaShield. If you're not satisfied, send back any unused shields and we’ll replace them or refund you.
